What counts as sunset
Sunset is when the last edge of the Sun disappears below the horizon, with the Sun's centre about 0.83° below it. It stays light for a while afterwards: civil dusk (Sun 6° down) is usually 25–40 minutes later at mid-latitudes, and longer in summer and further from the equator.
Times are calculated in your browser from the Sun's position (the same method as NOAA-style solar calculators). They assume a flat horizon at sea level, so mountains, buildings and altitude can shift what you actually see by a few minutes.
Frequently asked questions
When is the earliest sunset of the year?
In mid-northern latitudes the earliest sunset comes in early to mid December, about two weeks before the shortest day, because solar noon keeps drifting later through December.
How long does a sunset take?
The Sun's disc takes about 2–3 minutes to set at mid-latitudes and longer near the poles, where it sets at a shallow angle.
When is the best light for sunset photos?
The golden hour before sunset and the blue hour after it. Check the golden hour and blue hour pages for exact windows.
