Average Time Calculator
Paste a list of lap times, durations or clock times to get the average.
How to average times
- Pick what you are averaging: lap/race times (4:52 = 4 min 52 s), durations (1:30 = 1 h 30 min) or clock times (11:30 PM).
- Enter one time per line or separate them with commas. Formats like 1h 5m or 75s also work.
- Read the average, total, shortest and longest.
The formula
Average = sum of all times ÷ number of times, done in seconds.
Example: laps of 4:52, 5:03.4, 4:47 and 4:58 → 292 + 303.4 + 287 + 298 = 1,180.4 s ÷ 4 = 295.1 s = 4:55.1.
Clock times are averaged around the 24-hour circle, so bedtimes of 11:30 PM and 12:30 AM average to midnight rather than noon.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate an average lap time?
Convert each lap to seconds, add them up and divide by the number of laps, then convert back to minutes and seconds.
How do I average times like bedtimes that cross midnight?
Use Clock times mode. It treats the clock as a circle, so times either side of midnight average correctly.
Can I include tenths or hundredths of a second?
Yes. Enter 1:02.35 for 1 minute 2.35 seconds; the average keeps up to hundredths.
