Classroom Noise Meter
Show the class how loud the room is — calm, okay, or too loud — in real time.
🔒 Privacy: the microphone is only used to measure loudness on this device. Nothing is recorded, saved, or sent anywhere.
How to use the noise meter
- Press Start meter and allow microphone access when your browser asks.
- Watch the bar: green is calm, yellow is okay, red is too loud.
- Adjust Sensitivity to your room — raise it for quiet reading time, lower it for group work.
- Go fullscreen on the projector so everyone can see it.
How it works
The page reads short snippets of microphone audio, calculates their average loudness (RMS), and smooths it so a single cough does not trip the meter. Readings are relative, not calibrated decibels, which is why the sensitivity slider matters: every laptop microphone is different. The “too-loud moments” counter counts each time the level crosses into red and stays there for half a second.
Frequently asked questions
Does the noise meter record audio?
No. Audio is analysed live in your browser for its volume only. Nothing is stored or uploaded, and the microphone switches off when you press Stop or close the page.
Why does it say the microphone is blocked?
You (or a school policy) denied mic access. Click the camera/mic icon in the address bar, allow the microphone for this site, then press Start again.
Is this an accurate decibel meter?
It shows relative loudness, which is what matters for a classroom signal. For measured dB values use a calibrated sound level meter.
